Earth Day in San Francisco

46 years after its inception, Earth Day is still leading by example and innovating ideas each and every year, moving towards a cleaner and healthier planet. While conservation efforts shouldn’t be confined to a single day out of the year, Earth Day is the main force behind the conservation movement. We have to do what we can to preserve the planet we live on for the generations that will come after us! But how?

Around 300 million tons of plastic are produced each year to create the bags, bottles, and packages that we use every day. Not much of this plastic is being recycled or reused so it sits in landfills. By reducing the amount of plastic we’re using, we can make a huge difference. Invest in one good water bottle that you can refill when you’re thirsty and a couple of canvas bags that you can use for all of your shopping needs.

Even though snail mail has become a somewhat outdated form of mail, you can still find yourself inundated with tons of things in the mail each day. Most of it, you probably didn’t even sign up for! Around 28 billion gallons of water are wasted producing and recycling our junk mail. Cutting down on the junk mail cuts down on the waste. But what can you do about it? Signing up for one of these three services can have your name removed from widely distributed consumer mailing lists. Reducing the amount of junk mail you receive might seem insignificant but it can make a huge difference.

This Saturday, celebrate Earth Day with a huge street fest in San Fran. They’re calling this the most impactful, educational, and fun Street Fest so far! Enjoy top-notch multicultural entertainment on three different stages. Listen to internationally recognized speakers discuss conservation and their experiences. Participate in some hands on DIY crafts that you can take home with you. See the latest in green/sustainable fashion on the runway. There are so many exciting things happening at the Street Fest for Earth Day! Learn more about it here. The Earth Day Street Fest is only a 15 minute drive away from the Wilson Apartments.

Show A Little Extra Puppy Love

Image courtesy of 紫流 on Flickr
We know almost any pet owner will tell you that their little bundle of fur is just another member of their family. Pet owners are crazy about their pets. That’s why the Wilson is pet-friendly! If your pet is just like a family member then they deserve to be treated that way. In honor of National Pet Day this week, pamper them a little. Show them some extra love and attention and we bet that they’ll return the favor tenfold.

Dogs need to stretch their legs with wide open spaces sometimes. Certain dog breeds, like Huskies, Labs, Border Collies, and Terriers, are known to be particularly energetic and need to burn off that energy with outdoor exercise. Luckily, the Wilson comes equipped with its very own dog run. Fenced in to keep the pups contained, your dog can run free with other dogs without the leash hampering their fun. Once they’ve worn themselves out, make sure to refuel them with lots of water and a tasty snack.

After spending all day running around with their friends, we bet you’re going to have some pretty dirty pups on your hands. That’s no problem at the Wilson. Just bring them over to our pet washing station. They’ve love the extra attention you’re giving them while you’re sudsing them up and scrubbing them down.

For those of you who don’t have the good fortune of having a pet in their home, there are still plenty of opportunities to fill your home with fur-covered love. You may be familiar with the phrase ‘Adopt, don’t shop’ which is the idea that there are already so many animals searching for a loving home. There’s no need to seek out a breeder!

San Francisco’s Society of for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is at the forefront of the fight for animal welfare. Visiting them to help you find your new best friend is the best choice. They offer free to low-cost spaying and neutering for your new friend as well as education services for you on your new pet. One visit to the SF SPCA and you could end up coming home with a new forever friend.

We want your pets to feel just as at home as you do here at the Wilson! Celebrate them this week and show them a little extra appreciation in honor of National Pet Day. Make sure you share your pet photos with us!

Celebration National Beer Day

Image From Pixabay
Cheers! Did you know that it is National Beer Day? April 7th, 1933 was the first day in 13 years that people could buy, sell and drink beer. President Roosevelt signed the bill legalizing beer consumption and sales on March 22nd, and then on April 7th the new law went into effect. This unofficial holiday is celebrated all over the United States.

Now that you know the history, it is time to celebrate. Obviously, you need to drink a beer, but lets find out where the best places to celebrate are in San Francisco.

One of the ways to celebrate this holiday is by participating in a Scavenger Hunt. The Amazing National Beer Day Scavenger Hunt takes place tonight at 6pm. It even starts close to The Wilson at 554 Market Street. Create a team or the organizers can put you on a team tonight. Use your smart phone and clues to race around town and be the first person to reach the prize at the finish line.

If you want something a little less physical, you can visit Anchor Brewing. Anchor Brewing is a staple in San Francisco. It was one of the few breweries to survive the 13 years of Prohibition, and it is also the only local brewery that is still in existence from that time. Anchor Brewing is located at 1705 Mariposa St, San Francisco, CA 94107.

Another brewery that will help you celebrate National Beer Day is 21st Amendment Brewing! You can celebrate National Beer Day by going to a place that honors the amendment that ended prohibition. They even have a restaurant so you can have a bite or two while drinking your first or fifth beer to celebrate the holiday.

These are just a few of the locations that will help you celebrate National Beer Day. If you want to stay a little closer to your home at The Wilson, head to Toronado. They have specialty brews and IPAs that will give you something new to taste on this great holiday.

Clean Up This Spring

Image From Pixabay
Cleaning is something that no one wants to do. It is time consuming, and we would rather be out having fun. We all get a little lazy with our apartment cleaning. That’s alright, though. The spring weather is sticking around for a while so you still have tons of time to spruce up the place. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to begin before the official start of spring. Here’s how you can get your Wilson apartment back in tip top shape.

Split the work up for yourself. If you try and do it all in one or two days, you’ll stress yourself out about having to get it all done. Spreading it out over the span of a week or so will let you work at a slower pace and give more attention to the details. You won’t miss any spots if you spread all the work out. Create yourself a schedule and you’ll know exactly what needs to be done on what days.

Living Room

Get into those couch cushions and vacuum in between them to get all the built up clutter and dirt out. You might even find some money in there! Take everything off of coffee, side tables and book shelves. Make sure to dust not just under the objects but the objects themselves too. Dust all light fixtures and lamp shades. You’d be surprised at how much brighter it will get in the room once you remove that layer of dust. If you have any rugs lying about make sure to take them outside and shake them out to get the dust and debris off of them.

Kitchen

You wash dishes all the time but you probably don’t think of the place where your dishes live. Get everything out of your cabinets and wipe down the inside of the cabinets as well as the outside of the cabinets and handles. Think of how many hands have been on those handles! Next, empty out the refrigerator and wipe down all the shelves and drawers. Toss anything from the fridge that you know you won’t eat or is out of date. Wipe down your stove and oven. Messes are attracted to the stove so scrub it down extra well. Clean the microwave out by first putting a glass of water in for 30 seconds. This will loosen up all of the gunk caked onto the inside walls. Don’t forget to sweep and mop to clean up all those spills from the last few months.

Bathroom

Wipe down that mirror so you can see your beautiful face in it again! There’s no point in having it if you can’t see yourself in it. Your showerhead has probably built up a lot of residue over the time you’ve used it. Take a plastic zip bag, fill it with distilled white vinegar and tie it up around the shower head using a hair tie or rubber band. Let it sit for and hour and then wipe the head clean with a wash cloth. Take stock of your beauty products and hair care products. Over the next month keep track of what you’ve used or haven’t used and at the end of the month toss everything you haven’t used. You’ll cut down on your clutter and also streamline your routine.

It doesn’t take a lot of work to keep a home clean but it does take a lot of work to get it clean in the first place. So get a head start and get your stylish, luxury apartment back in shape and from here on out you’ll only have to do small things here and there.
